Plot summary
Jerrica Benton lives with her younger sister Kimber, their foster sisters Aja and Shana, and Aunt Bailey, whose money problems mean the house will be auctioned. The girls often film themselves playing music in colorful outfits, but Jerrica is too shy to sing on camera. Frustrated, she hides her face behind a wig and makeup and makes a video of a song she wrote; Kimber uploads it, and millions of views in one day bring a record deal from Starlight Productions. Jerrica and her sisters travel to Los Angeles, where they meet producer Erica Raymond and her son Rio. A small robot called 51N3RG.Y, built by Jerrica's late father Emmett, switches itself on and leads the girls on a scavenger hunt.

- Jem and the Holograms opened to $1.4 million, the worst opening of 2015 and the worst ever for a film released by a major studio, and Universal removed it from theaters just over two weeks later.
- Christy Marx, who wrote the original Jem animated series, had no involvement in the film's production, and defended director Jon M. Chu's ambition for the project on Facebook. She was later given a minor speaking role near the end of the film.
- Jon M. Chu had tried to make a Jem film 11 years before the 2015 version, but Universal rejected it because of the cost. His interest came from growing up watching the original series with his sisters.
- Ariana Grande and her manager Scooter Braun, who was also an executive producer on the film, were set to make cameo appearances, but their scene was cut from the final film.
