Plot summary
An emergency is called on O.I. Infini, a mining station near black holes, and teleporting there through Slipstream exposes travelers to severe time dilation. Whit Carmichael joins West Coast search and rescue on his first day; when the headquarters locks down to contain the crisis, he reaches the station on an illegal teleporter of his own. His pregnant wife Lisa asks him to come home safely. East Coast search and rescue is then told of the outbreak and of the destruction of the West Coast team, and is ordered to stop a payload programmed to travel to Earth and to bring back the one survivor.
