Plot summary
In 2104 the colony ship Covenant travels toward the remote planet Origae-6 with two thousand colonists in stasis and over a thousand human embryos aboard, watched over by Walter, an android. A stellar burst damages the vessel and kills forty-seven colonists, and Walter wakes the crew. Captain Jake Branson dies when his stasis pod malfunctions. While repairs are underway, the crew detects a radio signal from a nearby habitable planet. Daniels, Branson's widow, argues against it, but Oram, now the ship's captain, chooses to investigate. An expedition team descends to the surface and follows the signal to a crashed alien ship, where two of its members are infected by alien spores.

- The version released in China on June 16, 2017 was six minutes shorter than the version released elsewhere because of censorship, with most of the scenes involving the aliens cut, along with a scene where the two characters played by Michael Fassbender kiss.
- In 2016 Ridley Scott stated that Noomi Rapace would not reprise her role of Elizabeth Shaw, yet that June it was announced she would shoot a week's worth of scenes; no new footage of hers appeared in the final film. Creature designer Carlos Huantes said in 2019 that he believed it was the studio's decision to remove her.
- Ridley Scott wanted a more organic feeling to the creatures, as opposed to the biomechanical H.R. Giger inspiration behind the original films, so the San Diego Zoo and its representative Rick Schwartz consulted on the creature design, and Scott gave creature design supervisor Conor O'Sullivan anatomical studies and references from La Specola, a natural history museum in Florence.
- Approximately 30 people from CreatureNFX worked on the project for almost six months building animatronics, and actors wearing creature suits with animatronic heads were used to portray the aliens on-set.
- Summer Glau, Carolyn Murphy and Alice Eve were also being considered for the lead role of Daniels before Katherine Waterston was cast in it; the film was Waterston's second alongside Michael Fassbender, after Steve Jobs.
- An alien spaceship set that had first appeared in Prometheus had to be recreated for Alien: Covenant, because the set used in Prometheus had been destroyed.
