Plot summary
Kelly Mason is a high school outcast. A rare eating disorder, Pica, makes him swallow things that are not food, and a group of classmates, brothers Nelson and Reed among them, torment him for it. Bernice, his mother, looks after him, and his childhood friend Dominique returns his feelings. Desperate for a cure, Bernice begs a faith healer, Pflueger, to treat her son. Pflueger's gifts come from a Native American burial plot he robbed, and Red Elk, tasked with guarding it, has warned him to give them back. At the Mason home the healing fails: Pflueger is overpowered and does not survive, while Kelly's health improves at once. Any pain given to Kelly now returns to whoever inflicted it, something he learns when Reed attacks him.
