Tommy Lasorda
Biography
Tommy Lasorda was an American baseball pitcher and manager who managed the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1976 through 1996. Born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1945, pitched in the minor leagues, and appeared briefly in the majors for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Kansas City Athletics. He was the Montreal Royals' winningest pitcher before joining the Dodgers as a scout in 1960. After managing in their farm system and serving as a third-base coach, he took over the Dodgers in 1976. His teams won the World Series in 1981 and 1988, along with eight division titles and four National League pennants, and he was named NL Manager of the Year twice. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 1997, and he managed the U.S. Olympic team to gold in 2000. On screen, he voiced a role in Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996) and cameoed in Ladybugs (1992).

A first
Lasorda pitched for the Schenectady Blue Jays in 1948. In a 15-inning game on May 31 of that year, he struck out 25 Amsterdam Rugmakers, a professional record, and his single drove in the winning run.
A role that slipped away
In 1973, Lasorda joined Walter Alston's staff as third-base coach, a role he held for four seasons. Seen as Alston's likely successor, he declined other major league managing offers to stay with the Dodgers.
Beyond film
In the 1996 film Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco, Lasorda gave voice to Lucky Lasorta, a Black and White Havanese who commentates on a baseball game.
