Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Curly Sue (1991)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Curly Sue was written, produced and directed by John Hughes, and proved to be his final directing role for a film after a career behind the camera.
  • According to Lynch, when she signed on the project was initially intended to co-star Alec Baldwin, who had worked with Hughes on She's Having a Baby, and Kevin Spacey, in the parts later played by James Belushi and John Getz respectively.
  • Steve Carell made his film acting debut in Curly Sue as the character Tesio, billed on screen under the name Steven Carell rather than the Steve Carell audiences later knew.
  • Lynch said that although she loved working with Hughes, he and Belushi did not get along. "I kind of felt like a mom dealing with two 12-year-old boys," she said, adding that what she thought would be a cute, sweet little movie went on for something like five months.
  • On At the Movies, Gene Siskel said he was "floored" that Ebert gave Curly Sue a good review and compared it favorably to Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Siskel called the film "unctuous", said there was "no chemistry whatsoever" between Belushi and Lynch, and gave it a thumbs down.
