Plot summary
Vada Sultenfuss is eleven. She lives in Madison, Pennsylvania, where her widowed father, Harry, runs the town's funeral parlor and the family shares its home. It is the summer of 1972. Vada worries constantly about her health and thinks about death more than her father understands, and the recent dementia of her grandmother Gramoo adds to her fears. Her closest friend is Thomas J. Sennett, a boy her age who is allergic to nearly everything and goes with her to the doctor. Vada has a crush on Mr. Bixler, the fifth-grade teacher whose adult poetry class she joins. When Harry hires Shelly DeVoto as the parlor's makeup artist and begins courting her, Vada is outraged and sets out to split the two apart.

- The screenplay by Laurice Elehwany was originally titled Born Jaundiced and was purchased by Imagine Entertainment in July 1990; Daily Variety reported that August that it had been re-titled I Am Woman, before it was changed to My Girl in the spring of 1991.
- Though set in Pennsylvania, My Girl was filmed in the Florida towns of Sanford, Winter Haven, Plant City, Clermont and Bartow, with exteriors of the Sultenfuss home supplied by a real Victorian house in Bartow and the interiors built on a soundstage in Orlando.
- When My Girl was submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America in September 1991 it was rated PG-13, but later that month the film's producers won an appeal to have it reclassified to a PG rating.
- Screenwriter Laurice Elehwany based the fictional setting of Madison on the small towns in southwestern Pennsylvania where she grew up.
