Plot summary
Andrew and Katie are going to bed in a modern home during a thunderstorm, and their father agrees to read them the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. In the story, the two children and their father are so poor that he plans to sell the necklace of their late mother, until the wicked stepmother takes the necklace for herself. She leaves the siblings in the Magic Forest. Searching for food there, they are tricked into a troll's cave and rescued by the Sandman, who becomes their friend. The Sandman and the Wood Fairy, whom the children free, bicker constantly while helping them.
