Plot summary
Katherine Lewis is a dentist, as her father and grandfather were. A bicycle messenger hits her and she dies; she wakes in Limbo, the space between Heaven and Hell. There she learns she owes community service as a mythological being before entering Heaven. She signs a contract to serve as the Tooth Fairy, and Raul, a worker in Limbo, trains her. On her first night she visits Bobby Jameson, a lonely boy of twelve, and he sees her by accident. Only a child who still has baby teeth can see her; one who has lost them all cannot. Katherine learns that Bobby's mother died of cancer and that his father Thomas is busy with work. She chooses to take on the troubles of Bobby and his school friends, which brings her trouble with her superiors in Limbo.
