Plot summary
Grace Wesley, a history teacher, notices that her student Brooke Thawley has grown withdrawn since an accident killed Brooke's brother. Brooke wants to know how Grace stays so hopeful, and Grace answers with Jesus, so Brooke begins reading a Bible. In class, the lesson turns to nonviolent figures, and Brooke asks whether Jesus belongs among them; Grace quotes scripture and agrees. A student takes out a phone and reports that Grace has been preaching. Principal Kinney calls her in, and the school board puts Grace on administrative leave, offering to drop everything if she apologizes. Grace refuses, saying she quoted someone rather than preached. Tom Endler, a lawyer who is not a Christian, agrees to take her case when it goes to court.
