Plot summary
Sally Ross is rehearsing a major stage musical and reconnecting with Jake Berman, her ex-husband and a fellow actor. Douglas Breen, a record store clerk, writes her letters declaring himself her greatest fan. Her secretary, Belle Goldman, has been intercepting them and answering him herself to ask him to stop. Belle brings one of the letters to Sally, who scolds her for being rude to fans and shrugs it off, saying she has handled such fans before. After Douglas loses his job at the record store, he waits outside Sally's apartment building and follows her to rehearsals, then tries to deliver a letter to her at the studio in person.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Fan (1981)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Fan drew a considerable amount of media attention because it came out only a few months after John Lennon was shot to death by Mark David Chapman, a former fan, outside The Dakota, the New York building where star Lauren Bacall had lived for many years.
- Producer Robert Stigwood first considered Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft for the lead role in The Fan before Lauren Bacall agreed to take the part.
- Filmways had agreed to co-produce and distribute The Fan, but a financial crisis at the studio left it unable to cover the production budget, so Paramount Pictures took over and released the film in the United States on May 15, 1981.
- Director Waris Hussein left The Fan while it was in development over creative differences, and Edward Bianchi took over the director's chair.
