Plot summary
Jon Lansdale writes and draws Mandro, a successful comic book hero, and lives in the countryside with his wife Anne and their daughter Lizzie. Anne wants the family to move to New York, and the two argue on the road. Their car comes up behind a slow truck; Jon's right hand is caught and cut off, and Anne cannot find the severed hand at the scene. Jon searches as well and recovers only the signet ring she had given him, then has to work with a prosthesis. The couple move to New York, where his editor Karen Wagner suggests that another cartoonist, David Maddow, take over Mandro. Jon dislikes the changes made to his character, and Karen withdraws the offer and dismisses him.

- Oliver Stone's first choice for the lead in The Hand was Academy Award-winner Jon Voight, who declined; Stone also approached Dustin Hoffman and Christopher Walken. Michael Caine took the part wanting to earn enough for a down payment on a new garage.
- The financial losses of The Hand made executives reluctant to back another film with a crawling body part when Barry Sonnenfeld was pitching The Addams Family.
- Stan Winston and Carlo Rambaldi provided the special effects for The Hand, building several lifelike animatronic hands, each designed for a specific action or motion such as crawling, walking or grabbing.
- The Hand was Oliver Stone's second feature film as director, after 1974's Seizure, and his first film made for a major studio.
