Plot summary
Ann Gentry, a social worker, is troubled by guilt over the accident that changed her husband's life, and she is given a new case. The Wadsworth household holds Mrs. Wadsworth, her two grown daughters, and Baby, a man in his twenties who has no name of his own and is treated as an infant. His care shapes the family's days, and his disability payments are its income. His father left after the birth, and Mrs. Wadsworth keeps other caregivers away from him. Ann takes a special interest in Baby and thinks that proper treatment might teach him to behave more like a man of his age.
