Plot summary
Seth Dove is eight years old and lives on the Idaho prairie with his mother Ruth and his father Luke, who run a gas station. His father reads vampire novels. Seth and his friends Kim and Eben play in the fields, and the boys leave an inflated frog by the road. When Dolphin Blue, an English widow, stops to inspect it, Seth shoots the frog and it bursts over her. Sent to her house to apologize, Seth learns of her dead husband and hears her say she is two hundred years old. He decides she must be a vampire.

- Working with cinematographer Dick Pope, director Philip Ridley created a hyper-realized "mythical, hallucinogenic summer", personally spray-painting the wheatfields a brighter shade of yellow and shooting exterior scenes at 'magic hour', when the sun was at its most intense and golden.
- At its 1990 Cannes Film Festival premiere, critics declared The Reflecting Skin "déjà un culte" ("already a cult") before they had even left the auditorium, and word of mouth about its notorious exploding-frog opening was so intense that extra screenings were scheduled.
