Plot summary
Michael Elgin was a high school track star, and in his thirties he still holds life's harder facts at a distance with cocktails on too many nights. After he drives into a tree and walks away unhurt, the people around him decide to do something about his drinking. They gather at his house to confront him, with a psychiatrist hired to guide the conversation. The people waiting include his parents, his friends and co-workers, his wife and the woman he has recently begun seeing. The psychiatrist is stuck in town with a patient in crisis, so the group sits there, nervous, until Michael comes through the door.
