Plot summary

While visiting Amy's parents, the Planet Express crew watches Leo and Inez Wong tear down old Mars Vegas. Eco-feminists led by Frida Waterfall protest, and an accident lodges Frida's necklace in Fry's brain, leaving him able to hear other people's thoughts. A transient named Hutch gives Fry a tin foil hat and warns him about the Dark Ones. Leela rescues the last Martian muck leech from the site. Leo plans to destroy twelve percent of the galaxy to build the universe's biggest miniature golf course, and the crew finds a violet dwarf star teeming with primordial life. Professor Farnsworth approves the project, so Leela joins the eco-feminists. Hutch brings Fry to the Legion of Mad Fellows, whose Number 9 man says the violet dwarf is the Encyclopods' last egg, and that only Fry can save it.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Animating the climactic scene, which puts up to 200 Futurama characters on screen at once, cost extra: producer David X. Cohen notes overseas studio Rough Draft Korea charged a significant premium for the difficulty, and the children were left out because Morbo says no children are present.
  • Labor disputes twice disrupted the film. Producer Lee Supercinski says the studio got Rough Draft Studios' animatic two weeks before the deadline for the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, so the writers revised the script without fully reviewing it, and no writing was done during the strike.
  • The film won the 2009 Annie Award for Best Home Entertainment Production, and 20th Century Fox and Comedy Central cited sales of Into the Wild Green Yonder and the other Futurama direct-to-DVD movies as one reason Comedy Central renewed the Futurama television series in 2009.
  • Into the Wild Green Yonder was initially intended to end Futurama. After the show was renewed, Matt Groening wanted to ignore the film's ending and move on with the show, while David X. Cohen felt its revelations should be resolved, even if only briefly, as they were in the new season's premiere.
  • Writer Ken Keeler named the film's Martian muck leech Cyprinodon martius after Cyprinodon salinus, the scientific name of the real Death Valley pupfish, which, like the fictional leech, lives in the desert and is nearly extinct.
