Billy West
Biography
Billy West, born in Detroit in 1952 and raised in Boston and New Jersey, made his name as a voice actor and musician. He began in radio, performing on Boston's WBCN and New York's K-Rock before spending several years on The Howard Stern Show, then moved to Los Angeles for voice work. His first television voice role came on a revival of Beany and Cecil, and his first major parts were on Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show, where he voiced Stimpy from 1991 to 1996 and later Ren. He played Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in Space Jam (1996), Fudd again in Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003), and Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998). On Futurama he voiced Philip J. Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg and Zapp Brannigan. He also leads a band, Billy West and the Grief Counselors, and in 1998 Entertainment Weekly described him as the new Mel Blanc.

A role that slipped away
West has said that on the tape used to sell the show to Nickelodeon he performed the voices of both Ren and Stimpy, but once the sale went through Kricfalusi took over as the voice of Ren himself.
A role that slipped away
West refused to join the 2003 Ren & Stimpy reboot because he thought it was not funny and feared it would hurt his career, so Eric Bauza replaced him as Stimpy.
A first
West voiced Shaggy Rogers in the 1998 direct-to-video movie Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, the second person to portray the character after Casey Kasem. After Kasem retired in 2009, West was a top contender to replace him but lost the role to Matthew Lillard.
First role
West's first television voice role came on a short-lived revival of Beany and Cecil. He had left his radio station in 1988 to take that work.
