Plot summary
At seventeen, Maria Brennan is bullied by a classmate named Mark and has one friend, Lily. Sean, Lily's boyfriend, is the boy Maria secretly likes. Her father Dan, a plastic surgeon, stays distant at home, and her mother Amy is depressed and haunted by nightmares. Maria's reflection starts moving on its own, and after a dream about her own birth it speaks to her as Airam, confident and charismatic, offering to take her sadness away. Dan's early birthday present to her is cosmetic surgery, so she confides in Airam instead. Lily invites her to a skating lesson and leaves her on the ice, and Mark humiliates her at the dance. In the bathroom, Maria and Airam touch palms and lips and trade places.
