Plot summary
Kit Gordy's mother and stepfather send her to Blackwood Boarding School, and the headmistress, Madame Duret, along with the housekeeper, Miss Olonsky, greet her there. Four other girls with similar histories, Ashley, Izzy, Sierra and Veronica, arrive too. Madame Duret takes away their cellphones, says her rules are harsh, and promises that every student she chose will reach her full potential. Miss Olonsky gives the girls medication every night. Lessons come from Professor Farley in mathematics, Dr. Heather Sinclair in literature, Jules, Madame Duret's son, in music, and Madame Duret herself in art. Ashley writes poetry, Sierra paints, Izzy solves problems, and Kit plays piano with skill she did not have before. Madame Duret tells Kit that a certain room is off limits. Kit tells Jules about her father's death.
