Plot summary

As a boy, D'Artagnan sees his parents killed by Febre, a swordsman working for Cardinal Richelieu, and is wounded when he attacks the killer with his father's blade. Planchet, a family friend and former musketeer, takes him in and raises him. Fourteen years on, D'Artagnan reaches Paris and learns that Richelieu has disbanded the king's musketeers; the cardinal aims to make King Louis XIII a figurehead and to set France, England and Spain against one another. With help from the veterans Porthos and Aramis, D'Artagnan frees Captain de Tréville from prison. He lodges at a Paris boarding house and takes an interest in Francesca, the chambermaid. After Febre incites a mob during a state dinner for Lord Buckingham, Francesca asks D'Artagnan to escort the queen to the northern coast for a secret meeting with the English lord.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Musketeer (2001)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Musketeer is recognized by the department of Gers as the first Musketeers adaptation to incorporate authentic scenery from the real d'Artagnan's home region.
  • Early coverage of The Musketeer named Gary Oldman, who had been approached for the 1993 version, as a prospective co-star and had Michael Lonsdale in talks to appear, but neither participated; Catherine Deneuve negotiated for several months and only signed shortly before filming.
  • Vianden Castle in Luxembourg stood in for the fictional Duchamps Castle in the film's climactic action scene, and the town's mayor was apparently displeased with the damage the castle suffered during filming.
  • Casting agents for The Musketeer struggled to find extras to portray a bygone peasantry in rural southern France: despite local interest, most modern inhabitants lacked the rough facial features the production wanted and looked too urban.
  • A dispute between local extras and the Auzielle-based company Capitole Productions, which had hired them on behalf of the film's main producers, briefly disturbed the Toulouse shoot, and at least one scene was canceled as a result.
  • David Arnold composed and produced The Musketeer's score, and the soundtrack has been a fixture of Universal Studios Florida, where it could frequently be heard at the park's entrance.
