Plot summary
The Guardians of the Universe forged the Green Lantern Corps from the green energy of willpower, splitting the cosmos into 3,600 sectors and assigning one ring-bearing protector to each. Abin Sur of Sector 2814 once imprisoned the fear-fed being Parallax, but Parallax broke free and left him mortally wounded, and his crash on Earth sends his ring searching for a replacement. It settles on Hal Jordan, a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft, who recites the oath and is carried to the Lantern homeworld of Oa, where veterans Tomar-Re, Kilowog and Sinestro put him through training. On Earth, scientist Hector Hammond is summoned to examine Abin Sur's body under Amanda Waller's supervision, and a remnant of Parallax within it enters him, granting him psychic powers while Parallax itself draws near the planet.
