Plot summary
A magnum of wine from 1811, the year of the Great Comet and a celebrated vintage, comes to light bearing Napoleon's seal. It is found by Margaret Harwood, daughter of the wine merchant Sir Mason Harwood. T.T. Kelleher, his best customer, is offered the bottle and sends Oliver Plexico to bring it back; Oliver travels with Margaret as her guide and bodyguard. Three other parties are chasing the same magnum: a Greek billionaire has bought it from Margaret's brother, a French scientist believes the label hides a rejuvenation formula, and a thug means to sell it for himself. Their race runs from the Scottish Highlands toward the Riviera.

- William Goldman wrote the script in 1978 as the second of a three-picture deal with producer Joseph E. Levine, and had Glenda Jackson in mind for the female lead, with Cary Grant as his model for the male lead, though Levine wanted Robert Redford.
- Tim Daly, the film's male lead, said it may still hold the record as the biggest flop in Castle Rock history, and noted it opened the weekend of the Rodney King riots, when he reckoned few people were going out to the movies.
- Goldman attributed the film's poor previews to audiences having no enthusiasm for red wine, so a new opening sequence was added in which the male hero says he hates red wine and has to be dragged to a tasting, which Goldman said did not work.
