Plot summary
Two sisters, Hilary and Felice Dunbar, are parted as children in the Belgian Congo in 1963. Their aunt takes Felice away by train, carrying a cursed totem shaped like a serpent, and turns violently on the girl during the journey. Felice goes on with the talisman. Twenty-five years on, Hilary lives in Albany, New York, with her husband Jack, an architect, and their teenage daughter Amy. Felice, now a globe-traveling model, phones to propose a family meeting, and Hilary refuses. Hilary is killed in a freak car accident soon afterward. Months later Felice arrives in Albany, where she has been modeling for a vitamin company, and Jack asks her to move in with him and Amy. Brenda, the nurse next door, finds Felice off-putting.
