Plot summary
Claire Cooper lives in a suburban house with her eight-year-old daughter Rebecca; her husband Paul is an airline pilot who is frequently away from home for work. Claire illustrates children's stories, and she has had strange dreams since she was a girl, among them visions of an underwater city and of a young girl being killed. When a stranger abducts a girl nearby, Claire dreams of the man, but Detective Jack Kay disregards her concerns. Rebecca then disappears during an outdoor school play. Claire becomes convinced that her dreams are warnings and that she is somehow connected through them to whoever took the girl.

- While filming In Dreams in September 1997, Robert Downey Jr., who plays the killer Vivian Thompson, relapsed into drugs and was arrested again that December; he was later allowed temporary leave from jail to do the film's post-production work.
- The film's underwater sets were built and shot at 20th Century Fox studios on the Baja California Peninsula, in the very same water tank used for the underwater portions of James Cameron's Titanic (1997).
- DreamWorks Home Entertainment gave In Dreams a domestic LaserDisc release on August 17, 1999, making it one of the last films issued on that format in the United States.
- Cinematographer Darius Khondji put filters on the camera lenses to achieve lush accents in the film's autumnal imagery.
