Plot summary

Arthur Kipps, a widowed lawyer in Edwardian London, is sent by his firm to the village of Crythin Gifford. His task is to collect the papers of Alice Drablow, the deceased owner of Eel Marsh House, a lonely estate surrounded by marshland, before the property is sold. The villagers are cold toward him; the solicitor Jerome wants him to leave, while the landowner Samuel Daily offers friendship. At the house Arthur hears odd noises and a child screaming, finds a nursery door bolted, and catches sight of a woman dressed in black mourning clothes. He also hears voices and horses from the causeway but sees nobody. After a village girl, Victoria, dies in his arms, the townspeople hold him responsible. Sam confides that he and his wife Elisabeth lost a son in a drowning years before.
