Plot summary
The sisters Grace and Violet seldom leave their house in present-day New England, and they hold themselves apart from society. They have chosen a man, Luke, to play a part in a plan that is far from ordinary and that will not produce its result for nine months. Whatever happens in that time, neither of them may fall in love with him.
