Plot summary
Young Jim Craig returns to the Australian high country, after being away herding the horses he caught and sold, in order to provide a stake for his future. He finds things quite different than when he left: his girlfriend, Jessica Harrison, is being pursued by a rich suitor, Jessica's father wants him out of her life, and the residents of the high country are being driven out by the wealthier low country ranchers. Jim definitely has his work cut out for him.

- During filming, a pregnant mare in the horse mob broke a leg and had to be put down; a government inquiry later rejected allegations from the RSPCA and found the horse had been euthanized as humanely as possible under the circumstances.
- Kirk Douglas, who played station owner Harrison in the original Man from Snowy River, did not return for the sequel; the role was recast with Brian Dennehy.
- Geoff Burrowes, who had produced the original 1982 film, chose to direct this sequel himself because he felt so strongly about the material that he thought he would inevitably clash with any other director brought in.
- Composer Bruce Rowland won the 1989 APRA Award for Best Original Music Score for the soundtrack he wrote for Return to Snowy River.
