Biography

Lloyd Bacon was an American actor and film director who built a long career in Hollywood. Born in San Jose, California, he began acting in silent shorts alongside Charlie Chaplin and Broncho Billy Anderson, appearing in more than 40 films. He was best known as a supporting player to Chaplin in The Tramp (1915), The Champion (1915), and Easy Street (1917). Bacon later turned to directing, completing over 100 films between 1920 and 1955. His output covered crime dramas, westerns, musicals, comedies, and gangster stories. During the 1930s he was among the Warner Bros. directors who gave the studio a reputation for gritty, fast-paced action pictures. He directed 42nd Street, where Busby Berkeley handled the song-and-dance sequences, as well as Footlight Parade (1933), A Slight Case of Murder (1938), The Oklahoma Kid (1939), Knute Rockne, All American (1940), Action in the North Atlantic (1943), and Wake Up and Dream (1946).
