Biography

Leo White was a German-born British-American actor who worked on both stage and screen and became familiar as a character player in Charlie Chaplin's comedies. He grew up in England, where he first performed on stage, and Broadway producer Daniel Frohman later brought him to the United States. White began making films in 1911 and moved to Essanay Studios in 1913. Starting in 1915 he appeared in Chaplin's comedies and stayed with the series through the Mutual films. His final part for Chaplin was a small one in The Great Dictator (1940). White also directed and appeared in Triple Trouble (1918), which he made around existing Chaplin footage without Chaplin's participation, and he was often cast as dapper continental villains or noblemen. During the 1940s he continued to play excitable Frenchmen in short subjects and features, and he appeared in more than 400 films.

  1. Behind the camera

    White both directed and appeared in Triple Trouble, released in 1918 as Essanay's final Chaplin release. Chaplin did not take part in making it, so White shot new scenes around footage that already existed.

  2. A change of course

    White was brought to the United States by Broadway producer Daniel Frohman, and he began his film career in 1911 before moving to Essanay Studios in 1913.
