John Salew
Biography
John Salew was an English actor of stage, film, and television who was born in Portsmouth and died in 1961. He moved into screen work in 1939 after acting in the theater, and the Allmovie database observed that wartime labor shortages let the stout, balding performer take on bigger parts than he would have landed otherwise. He most often played shady or suspicious figures, many of them German. His films included Time Flies (1944), a comic fantasy in which he was William Shakespeare, Uncle Silas (1947), a Gothic melodrama where he played Grimstone, and Night of the Demon (1957), a supernatural thriller in which he was the librarian. On television he appeared as Colonel Wentzel in a 1958 episode of The Adventures of William Tell, and he kept taking character parts into the TV era, in the vein of the American actor John McGiver.
