Zeffie Tilbury

Biography

Zeffie Tilbury was an English-American actress who worked first on the London stage and then on Broadway. Born in Paddington, England, she made her first stage appearance in 1881, in Nine Points of the Law at Brighton's Theatre Royal. She went on to appear in more than 70 films, known for elderly roles that were wise or evil, among them Grandma Joad in The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and Grandma Lester in Tobacco Road (1941). Her earliest surviving silent film was Camille (1921), and in The Bohemian Girl (1936) she played the Gypsy Queen. She was probably best remembered as the old woman befriended by Spanky and his friends in the Our Gang comedy Second Childhood. She died in 1950.
