Plot summary
Annie Parker grows up in a family that breast cancer keeps returning to: her mother collapses and dies when Annie is eleven, and her older sister Joan is later diagnosed with the same illness. Annie marries Paul and starts a family of her own, then is diagnosed with breast cancer herself and begins treatment while trying to hold her household together. Meanwhile, geneticist Mary-Claire King works at UC Berkeley on her conviction that some breast and ovarian cancers are inherited, an idea most of her colleagues reject. She gathers families with unusually high rates of the disease and pushes for the funding and the genetic mapping tools her team needs to find the gene involved.
