Plot summary
In a riverside village in Borneo, Ken Manchester and his new wife Barbara are to meet the guide for their honeymoon safari. Barbara would prefer a resort; Ken, a wealthy American traveler, hopes to prove himself a hunter. An elephant stampedes and Barbara is nearly killed. Buck Malone, an American seaplane pilot and hunter who has fallen on hard times, shoots the animal, and it topples onto the Manchesters' first guide. Buck is arrested, and a magistrate says the charge will be dropped if he hands over a sacred amulet. He refuses. Ken pays the fine so that Buck will lead the party, and Buck's local associate Sinanga comes along.

- Buck Malone's plane was meant to be a larger Grumman HU-16 Albatross, but efforts to procure one fell through and a derelict Lake Buccaneer was bought from a local businessman only days before the plane scenes in late May. It was hastily repaired, but the wing spars broke during transportation and it arrived not airworthy.
- Once it arrived, the Lake Buccaneer's external lights did not work, which attracted the attention of the Sri Lankan Air Force, its bilge pumps were defective, and a gear door had to be sealed shut with sewing thread for one take off. Production designers nonetheless applied paper to the hull to make it look even more rickety.
- The shoot took place in humid heat up to 110 °F, with only five rooms at the main hotel having air conditioning, and actors tied up with vines in one scene developed an allergic reaction. Kathy Shower was the most affected and had to be sent back to Los Angeles for treatment.
- The film generated a small controversy in Sri Lanka when revealing pictures from the shoot were published in the Sunday Divaina, a local tabloid.
- The deadly Aluth Oya massacre happened while the film was shooting, causing concern for relatives of the crew back in the U.S., though the crew itself was not affected.
- The plane and helicopter in the film were flown by local army pilots; for the takeoff scene they were asked to fly under the Botanical Gardens' suspended bridge, which was deemed unsafe, and flying above they still got a stall warning when they cleared nearby Primrose Hill.
- Director David Keith consulted Kathy Shower before her sex ritual scene and made sure to get through it in as few takes as possible.
