Plot summary
In Aroostook County, Maine, wildlife officer Walt Lawson dives in Black Lake while Sheriff Hank Keough watches from the surface, and something in the water goes for him. Jack Wells, a federal fish and wildlife officer, and Kelly Scott, a paleontologist at the American Museum of Natural History, arrive to help Hank work out what is in the lake. Hector Cyr, a wealthy professor of mythology and a crocodile enthusiast, joins them and argues that a freshwater crocodile is responsible. The others doubt him. That evening the group makes camp and prepares a plan to catch a creature none of them has seen.

- The monster at the center of the film, a 32-foot-long crocodile, was created by Stan Winston Studios and was operated by aquatic hydraulics.
- Most of the crocodile vocalizations used in the film were recorded from real alligators, taped in Orlando, Florida, at Gatorland.
- Three different lakes in British Columbia stood in for the fictional Black Lake: Shawnigan Lake, Buntzen Lake and Hayward Lake.
- The film was followed by five low-budget made-for-television sequels, the first of them Lake Placid 2, which appeared in 2007.
