Benjamin Whitrow
Biography
Benjamin Whitrow was a British actor, born in Oxford, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional debut in 1955. After eight years in repertory theater he joined Laurence Olivier's National Theatre company at The Old Vic, and he went on to perform with the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor and, later, Sir Anthony Absolute in The Rivals. He played Mr Bennet in the BBC's 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, a performance that brought him a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Actor, and he voiced Fowler, an old rooster, in the animated film Chicken Run (2000). His other screen work included Quadrophenia (1979), Personal Services (1987) and Bomber (2009), and his final film role was Sir Samuel Hoare in Darkest Hour (2017).

Early training
Whitrow left the army in 1959 and returned to acting as Hector Hushabye in George Bernard Shaw's Heartbreak House at the Empire, Belfast. He then did an eight-year apprenticeship in rep, later joining the National Theatre company at The Old Vic under Laurence Olivier.
