Plot summary
Richie Lanz is a rock manager whose career now hangs on one client, Ronnie Smiler. He takes Ronnie on a USO tour of Afghanistan, and the trip leaves him in Kabul with no money and no passport. In the country he meets Merci, a partner of his there, and Bombay Brian, who provides his armed protection and acts as his book client. Richie discovers Salima Khan, a young Afghan singer with an extraordinary voice. He goes to Daoud, the producer of Afghan Star, and tries to persuade him to let Salima compete on the program, Afghanistan's version of American Idol, a television talent contest.

- Shia LaBeouf had been cast in Rock the Kasbah but dropped out in March 2014, and Scott Caan replaced him a few days later.
- The story is very freely adapted from the 2009 documentary Afghan Star, and the film was dedicated to Setara Hussainzada, one of that documentary's stars.
