Plot summary
Barbie tells her little sister Kelly a story about a princess kept hidden from the world. Rapunzel serves the witch Gothel in a manor cut off from everything by a magic wall, scrubbing rooms when she would rather paint. Gothel says Rapunzel's parents abandoned her as a baby, and her only company is Penelope, a young dragon, and Hobie, a worried rabbit. When the friends open a secret tunnel, Rapunzel finds a silver hairbrush bearing a message from her parents, and the account Gothel gave her no longer fits. Outside the wall she pulls young Princess Katrina out of a hole, with help from Katrina's brother, Prince Stefan, whose kingdom is locked in a feud with the neighboring one.

- The paintings Rapunzel creates in the film are not animated artwork but real paintings by artist Amanda Dunbar, digitally inserted into the movie; Dunbar said she joined the project because she liked that it encouraged art as a form of expression.
- The film's 15 human characters were built from motion-capture performances recorded over 16 days, while the animators bought separate motion-capture data from a Texas studio just to animate the movements of a CGI horse.
