Plot summary
Sarah Bailey leaves San Francisco for Los Angeles, where her father and stepmother have enrolled her at a Catholic high school. She falls in with three outcast classmates: Bonnie, whose skin carries burn scars, Nancy, who shares a trailer with her mother and a violent stepfather, and Rochelle, taunted by white girls at school. The trio dabbles in witchcraft and worships an earth deity named Manon. Bonnie watches Sarah move a pencil without touching it in class, and the girls decide she is the fourth their coven has been missing, one witch for each of the four elements. Sarah joins, and together the four attempt spells the trio could never manage alone.

- Eighty-five actresses tried out for The Craft's four lead witches, including Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson and Alicia Silverstone, before the parts went to Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True.
- Robin Tunney was first cast as outcast Bonnie, but producers switched her to the lead role of Sarah instead; she accepted only reluctantly, since she had actually preferred playing Bonnie.
- Robin Tunney had shaved her head for an earlier role in Empire Records, so throughout filming on The Craft she had to wear a wig to play Sarah.
- During filming of The Craft, an unrelated accident on set left a child injured badly enough that the production's own medic stepped in and called paramedics.
- To keep The Craft's portrayal of witchcraft respectful and accurate, the production hired a practicing Wiccan, Pat Devin, as its on-set advisor, and she personally wrote the incantations the characters recite.
- Singer Heather Nova's cover of Peter Gabriel's "I Have the Touch," heard over The Craft's end credits, was made exclusively for the soundtrack album; it was never released as a single, put on any of her own albums, or performed by her live.
- The Craft's influence reached pop music: the film served as an inspiration for Katy Perry's 2013 hit song "Dark Horse."
