Plot summary
Lily Cotton graduates from college and travels to Bali with her friend Wren Butler. Snorkeling off the coast, the two are left behind when their tour boat departs, and a young Balinese seaweed farmer, Gede, rescues them. Lily and Gede take to each other that night. A month later she emails her parents to say she and Gede are marrying and that she is staying in Bali, giving up the legal career she has not started. Her parents, David and Georgia Cotton, have been divorced for two decades and regret their own marriage. They agree to a truce and fly out to convince her she is rushing. Their pilot is Paul, Georgia's boyfriend.
