Did you know?!

  1. Big break

Mulaney's appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien led to an invitation to audition for Saturday Night Live in August 2008, where he joined Kroll, Donald Glover, Ellie Kemper, T.J. Miller and Bobby Moynihan. Instead of impressions, he did stand-up containing "charactery bits in them".

  2. A change of course

After finishing Georgetown in 2004, Mulaney moved to New York City hoping for a comedy career and got a job as an office assistant at Comedy Central. A year later he quit, calling the position a hindrance to being a comedian, and began freelancing.

  3. A first

Mulaney hosted Saturday Night Live six times, on dates including April 14, 2018, and November 2, 2024. He was the fourth SNL writer to host, after Conan O'Brien, Louis C.K. and Larry David.

  4. Behind the camera

Mulaney spent four seasons on the writing team, where he wrote monologues for the hosts. He and SNL actor Bill Hader also co-created the recurring character Stefon.

  5. Getting ready for a role

In Season 3, Mulaney took his first acting role on the show, appearing in the 2019 episode "Original Cast Album: Co-Op." He wrote the episode and its songs alongside Meyers, and he portrays Simon Sawyer, a fictional figure based on Stephen Sondheim.
