Bob Costas
Biography
Bob Costas is an American sportscaster known for his time at NBC Sports, which he joined in 1980 and where he became a fixture of NFL and NBA studio coverage, baseball play-by-play and the network's prime-time Olympic broadcasts. He grew up in Commack, New York, and got his start in broadcasting while studying at Syracuse University, taking his first professional job at WSYR-TV in Syracuse in 1973. He hosted 12 Olympic Games from 1988 until 2016, called Major League Baseball and NBA games, and fronted Later with Bob Costas from 1988 to 1994. His 29 Emmy Awards include wins in sports, news and entertainment, the only person in television to manage that. He also worked for HBO, TBS and MLB Network, and published Fair Ball: A Fan's Case for Baseball in 2000. He appeared as himself in BASEketball (1998) and voiced the car Bob Cutlass in Cars (2006) and Cars 3 (2017).

Early training
As a Syracuse University freshman, Costas gained his first radio experience at WAER, a student run station. In the mid-1980s he set up the Robert Costas Scholarship at the Newhouse School, and Mike Tirico was its first recipient in 1987.
Big break
When Don Ohlmeyer hired Costas at NBC in 1980 to run the network's sports division, he told the 28-year-old Costas that he looked like a 14-year-old.
A role that slipped away
Costas refused to host an August 18, 2005 Larry King Live broadcast about missing teenager Natalee Holloway, saying there were no new developments and he was uncomfortable with television's drift toward tabloid stories.
Beyond film
Costas gave the voice of God in Spamalot, the Monty Python musical, at The Muny Repertory in St. Louis in June 2013.
Behind the camera
In his book Fair Ball, Costas suggested that just the three division winners in each league make the postseason, and that the team with the best record get a bye to the League Championship Series.
