Cristela Alonzo
Biography
Cristela Alonzo is an American comedian, actress, writer, and producer. She was the creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, making her the first Mexican American woman to serve as creator, producer, writer, and star of her own American primetime comedy. She started doing stand-up in 2003 while working at the Addison Improv and got her first break in 2006 writing for the Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia. After a semi-finalist run on Last Comic Standing in 2010, she created the semi-autobiographical Cristela, which ABC picked up in 2014 and concluded in 2015. Alonzo voiced Cruz Ramirez in Cars 3 (2017) and released the Netflix stand-up specials Cristela Alonzo: Lower Classy (2017) and Cristela Alonzo: Middle Classy (2022). She also published the memoir Music to My Years in 2019 and hosted the podcast Chicano Squad.

Big break
In 2006, Alonzo landed her first break in Los Angeles, hired to write on Carlos Mencia's Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia. She then rode a bus for two years with Mencia and five other male comics.
Early training
Alonzo moved out at 18 to study theater at Webster University in St. Louis, but she quit when she could not pay for school anymore.
Big break
In 2010, Alonzo reached the semi-finals of the TV show Last Comic Standing. That exposure brought her a segment in May 2011 on the comedy showcase Legally Brown.
Beyond film
In 2020, Alonzo voiced and hosted Chicano Squad, an 11-episode podcast tied to the Vox Media Podcast Network. It tells of a five-man Latino homicide squad working in the Houston area during the 1970s.
