Plot summary
In 1913, a colony of artists called the Lamorna Group works in Cornwall, among them Alfred Munnings, known as AJ, and the painters Laura and Harold Knight. AJ's close friend Gilbert Evans, a former army officer who served in the Boer War, is the land agent for the Lamorna Valley estate and socializes with the group. One night Florence Carter-Wood reaches the village, wanting to study painting with the artists, to join her brother Joey, and to escape her father's control. Gilbert is drawn to her at once. She wants to study sketching with AJ, poses on horseback for a painting of his, and grows close to Gilbert, who notes their meetings in his diary.

- Producer Jeremy Cowdrey insisted on filming the true story of Alfred Munnings, Gilbert Evans and Florence Carter-Wood on location in Cornwall, the actual county where the real events took place, rather than shooting elsewhere.
- Composer Benjamin Wallfisch was so impressed by pianist Yuja Wang's playing during recording sessions that he wrote her an entire solo piano suite built from the film's main musical themes.
