Plot summary
In 1840s Lyme Regis, fossil collector Mary Anning runs a small shop with her ailing mother Molly. Mary searches the beach at low tide for fossils, mostly ammonites. Geologist Roderick Murchison visits with his wife Charlotte and pays Mary to guide him on the shore. He then leaves Charlotte in Mary's care while he travels to Europe, saying she needs to convalesce. Charlotte begins joining Mary's morning beach trips. After sea bathing, Charlotte falls ill with a fever, and Dr. Lieberson assigns Mary to nurse her. As Charlotte recovers, she helps with chores, and the two women spend more time together, forming a bond that crosses their different social worlds.
