Plot summary
Madrid, 1922. Eighteen-year-old Salvador Dalí enrolls at the Residencia de Estudiantes, a modern home for Spain's brightest students, with his mind fixed on becoming a great painter. His mix of shyness and exhibitionism catches the eye of poet Federico García Lorca and would-be filmmaker Luis Buñuel, and the three become the core of the city's avant-garde set. Federico brushes aside the attentions of Magdalena, a writer in their circle, while Salvador finds himself pulled toward Federico's magnetism. Feeling shut out by the pair's closeness, Luis leaves for Paris to pursue his own ambitions. Salvador takes Federico to Cadaqués, the family's seaside town, for the summer.

SPOILER
Federico García Lorca's homosexuality seems to have given an extra thrill to those who assassinated him in 1936 in repressive Spain, and his biographer Leslie Stainton has suggested the killers remarked on his sexual orientation.
