Plot summary
Stacie Andree is a car mechanic in New Jersey, and her domestic partner Laurel Hester works as a police detective in Ocean County. In 2005, doctors find that Hester has terminal lung cancer. She asks the county's board of chosen freeholders to let her pension benefits go to Andree. Dane Wells, Hester's partner on the force, supports her. Steven Goldstein founded Garden State Equality. Bryan Kelder is a lawyer and a member of that board.

- Elliot Page was attached to play Stacie Andree for almost six years before the film was made. Producers Stacey Sher and Michael Shamberg sent him Cynthia Wade's documentary and asked if he would star in an adaptation; he said yes "right away".
- Zach Galifianakis was originally cast as Garden State Equality founder Steven Goldstein, the activist who takes up Laurel Hester's case, and was later replaced by Steve Carell.
- A scene set for Salesian High School, a Catholic boys' school in New Rochelle, New York, collapsed in late October 2014 when the principal reversed his permission. The crew moved to the city hall of Rye, New York, which doubled for the Ocean County building where Hester and Andree register as domestic partners.
