Plot summary
Franz Jägerstätter and his wife Franziska, called Fani, live in St. Radegund, a mountain village in upper Austria. He works the fields, and both of them are valued members of the community. Three daughters arrive over the years. When war breaks out, Franz is called away for basic training and spends months apart from his family. He comes home after France surrenders and the fighting looks close to its end, and he farms the land again. As the war continues, the village's able-bodied men are summoned, and each must take an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler. Franz refuses it, though the mayor, his neighbors and the Bishop of Linz press him, and the village turns against his wife and children.
