Diana Rigg
Biography
Diana Rigg was born in Doncaster in 1938 and died in 2020. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her professional stage debut in 1957. After joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, she became widely known for playing secret agent Emma Peel in the television series The Avengers. Her film roles included Tracy Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), as well as parts in The Assassination Bureau (1969), Julius Caesar (1970), The Hospital (1971), and Theatre of Blood (1973). She later appeared in The Great Muppet Caper (1981), Evil Under the Sun (1982), and The Worst Witch (1986). On stage, she won a Tony Award for Medea in 1994. For television, she earned a BAFTA for Mother Love and an Emmy for Rebecca, and received Emmy nominations for Game of Thrones as Olenna Tyrell. She hosted the PBS series Mystery! from 1989 to 2003. Her final film role was in Last Night in Soho (2021).

A role that slipped away
Rigg replaced Elizabeth Shepherd as Emma Peel in The Avengers at very short notice, after Shepherd was dropped from the role following two filmed episodes. Rigg had auditioned on a whim and had never seen the program.
Early training
Rigg trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1955 to 1957, in a class that included Glenda Jackson and Sian Phillips.
First role
Rigg made her professional debut in 1957, playing Natasha Abashwilli in the RADA staging of The Caucasian Chalk Circle at the York Festival.
Behind the award
Rigg's title turn in Medea, staged in both London and New York, earned her the 1994 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. It also gave her the first of four Laurence Olivier Award nominations in her career.
