Plot summary
The story opens in June 1467, when Charles le Téméraire has just become Duke of Burgundy. Charles asks for the hand of Jeanne de Beauvais, the daughter of King Louis XI, and he makes clear that he wants the valuable lands that would come with her as a dowry. Louis XI is wise to the proposal, and since Jeanne herself has no wish to accept it, her father refuses him. Charles then turns to a plan to abduct a prince, arranging the affair in such a way that suspicion would settle on Robert de Neuville, a noble who is enamored of the princess.
