Biography

Jean-Louis Barrault was a French actor, director and producer who began as a teacher and an art student before training in drama with Charles Dullin and in mime with Etienne Decroux, supporting himself as a bookkeeper and flower salesman in those early years. Devoted to classical and avant-garde repertoire, he helped renew French theater after World War II, presenting world premieres of works by Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco and Jean Genet. He turned to directing with Les beaux jours in 1935 and later joined the Comedie Francaise as an actor and director. On screen he played Beethoven's nephew Karl in The Life and Loves of Beethoven (1936) and appeared in Bizarre, Bizarre (1937), but his most notable film role was Baptiste in Children of Paradise (1945), a performance that revived public interest in pantomime and influenced the popularity of mime Marcel Marceau. He received a special Tony award, and directed the Theatre d'Orsay from 1974 to 1981.
